Starting with Fimo clay does not have to be complicated. With a few colours of clay, simple tools and clear baking instructions, you can already make jewellery, keychains, figures, beads and decorations. A good starter kit helps you begin right away without having to choose too many separate products.
For most beginners, Fimo Soft is the best first choice. It is smooth, easy to knead and suitable for many different projects. If you want to work with special finishes right away, you can add Fimo Effect. For very fine details or clean shapes, Fimo Professional is interesting, but usually after you have mastered the basics.
Fimo Soft is accessible and versatile. You can cut shapes, mix colours, make simple figures and design jewellery with it. Fimo Kids is extra soft and mainly suitable for children or simple children's projects. Adult beginners who want to make jewellery usually benefit more from Fimo Soft, because this product line offers more possibilities and colours.
A set with several half blocks is practical as a starting point. It lets you try different colours without buying large amounts immediately. If you often use white, black or a basic colour, you can add single blocks or larger packs later.
A practical starter kit contains white, black and a few basic colours such as red, yellow and blue. With these colours, you can mix many shades. White makes colours lighter and softer, black makes them darker and basic colours allow you to build new tones.
For jewellery, pastel colours, natural tones and effect colours are popular. Fimo Effect with glitter, metallic, transparent or granite finishes quickly creates a special result. Start with a limited colour palette so you can learn what fits your style.
You do not need many tools at the beginning. A smooth work surface, acrylic roller, sharp blade, baking paper and possibly a few cutters are enough for many first projects. Work on a clean surface that does not stick to the clay.
For jewellery, you also need earring posts, jump rings, pendants, brooch pins or chains. A hand drill, fine sandpaper, jewellery glue and Fimo varnish are useful for finishing, but not always necessary for your first project.

Make a small test piece first if you mix colours or use a new effect. This shows you how the clay behaves and how the colour looks after baking.
Most oven-hardening Fimo clays are baked for about 30 minutes at 110 degrees Celsius. Always check the packaging. Let your work cool completely before sanding, drilling, gluing or varnishing. Store unused clay airtight, cool and away from direct light so it stays usable for longer.
